My brother wanted a weather station so he went to Costco and got an
Acurite 5-in-1 with the wireless remote display unit. We tested the rain guage, put the
outdoor unit on a 20' pole on the back porch and got it running. We now had all
the weather info right there in the house. You can hook the display unit to a computer with
a USB cable and with the included software send your data to Weatherunderground.
Only problem was the unit was in the kitchen and my computers are else where. So I bought
another remote display and put it in the shack. Hooked it up and started sending the weather
reports to Weatherunderground. Pretty neat stuff but I wanted more.
I got in touch with a ham south of me who has had his wx station on line for some years
and he gave me a lot of info. When he told me about using a Raspberry Pi running
WeeWx software I went for it. I bought another Pi and got the software setup.
WeeWx software for the Raspberry Pi
I had already registered with Weatherunderground so while editing the configuration
file and making sure everything was running I also registered with
The Citizen Weather Observer Program (CWOP)
Soon our station was showing on
Weatherunderground and
APRS. Click "show map" to see our location
CALIFORNIA APRSWXNET/CWOP STATION
This site has all the info and graphs from the station.
These are the basics on what you need to get your weather station reporting to the world.
A fair amount of setting up is required and I'll be happy to provide any other information
you may need......
